A 67-year-old Belgian passenger was airlifted from a cruise ship off the coast of Cyprus on Monday after the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) launched a medical evacuation operation.

The rescue was carried out under the national search and rescue plan "NEARCHOS" after the passenger required urgent medical assistance while the vessel was sailing about 110 nautical miles northwest of Paphos. The operation began at 3:20pm on June 29.

A helicopter from the Police Air Operations Unit was dispatched to reach the ship. The flight also carried a specialist nurse from the Cyprus Health Services Organisation (OKYPY) Ambulance Service's dedicated air medical evacuation team to provide care during the transfer.

Following the rescue, the patient was flown to Nicosia General Hospital, arriving at 6:50pm, where further treatment was arranged.
