The Parliamentary Health Committee has examined proposed regulations to establish designated breastfeeding and breast milk expression rooms in workplaces and public areas.
DISY MP and Committee Deputy Chair Savia Orphanidou stated that this initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to support motherhood, including extended maternity leave and improved breastfeeding rights. She noted that after four years, the bill is finally progressing, ensuring compliance with World Health Organization recommendations.
Key concerns raised included the obligations placed on businesses, enforcement mechanisms, and possible cooperation between private companies and public spaces. Orphanidou emphasized the need for well-regulated and dignified breastfeeding areas that provide real benefits to mothers.
AKEL MP Marina Nikolaou pointed out that these regulations have faced years of delays, despite originating from 2018 legislation. She stressed the state’s responsibility to promote breastfeeding as part of children’s right to better health. Nikolaou also raised questions about enforcement and ensuring the new regulations do not undermine existing maternity rights, such as the one-hour workday allowance for nursing mothers.
