In a significant diplomatic development, China has officially abolished visa requirements for Cypriot nationals, marking a new chapter in the relationship between the two countries. The announcement was made during a bilateral meeting between Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
The decision is seen as a practical demonstration of the strengthened ties between Cyprus and China, which have continued to deepen over the years. Government Spokesman Constantinos Letibiotis stated that the visa exemption reflects the “excellent bilateral relations” between the nations.
In addition to the visa announcement, the two leaders discussed an intergovernmental agreement on air transport that will further enhance connectivity between the countries. The agreement is expected to boost economic and travel opportunities between China and Cyprus.
The meeting also touched on the ongoing Cyprus issue, with President Christodoulides briefing Wang Yi on the latest developments and efforts to resume negotiations. China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, reaffirmed its longstanding support for a resolution based on principles and international values.
