Dozens of residents living in the Seagate apartment building in Limassol’s tourist area are anxiously waiting to learn whether they will soon be forced to leave their homes, after authorities moved forward Wednesday with a request to evacuate and demolish the aging building.
The Limassol District Government Organization filed a request before the court seeking approval for both the evacuation and demolition of the apartment block in Germasogeia, which officials say is considered one of the most dangerous buildings in Limassol.
According to Yiannis Tsouloftas, president of the organization, the request was officially submitted Wednesday morning by the organization’s legal team.
“We are waiting to see whether the court will approve the two requests, for evacuation and demolition, and whether residents will be given a deadline to leave,” Tsouloftas told CNA.
For many tenants, the case is about far more than concrete and court procedures. It is about where they will sleep next week, how quickly they may have to move, and whether they can even afford to find another place in Limassol’s increasingly expensive housing market.
The Seagate building, located in one of Limassol’s busy tourist areas, has reportedly raised serious safety concerns for some time, with authorities now pushing for urgent action.
A court decision is expected soon. If the request is approved, authorities will then face another major challenge: finding solutions for the dozens of residents who could suddenly be left without a home.
