Cypriot leaders have agreed to establish a "Bicommunal Youth Technical Committee" to encourage dialogue and cooperation among young people from both communities.

President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar reached the agreement during a meeting in the buffer zone. The committee, aimed at fostering youth engagement, will consist of members under 35 years old and maintain gender balance.

The meeting, held at the office of the U.N. secretary-general’s special representative in Cyprus, lasted an hour and a half. Each side will nominate 12 members, with the final list submitted to the U.N. by April 15.

Discussions also addressed the ongoing work of the Environment Technical Committee, which is examining climate change and the environmental impact of mining. Meanwhile, the Cultural Heritage Committee is focusing on cemetery restoration, a matter of historical and emotional importance.

Leaders also reviewed practical issues, including the operation of crossing points and a proposal for a solar power plant in the buffer zone. Their special representatives will continue negotiations to find mutually acceptable solutions.

The meeting was hosted by U.N. Special Representative Colin Stewart and attended by Greek Cypriot Negotiator Menelaos Menelau and Turkish Cypriot Special Representative Güneş Onar.

Although Christodoulides and Tatar did not attend the 1,000th meeting of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) at Ledra Palace, they posed for a commemorative photo with CMP members before their talks, reaffirming their support for the committee’s humanitarian work.

Both sides described the discussions as constructive and agreed to continue dialogue in the near future.
