Cyprus and Saudi Arabia are on a path of strengthening ties further, with the island preparing to hold a Cyprus chamber forum in Riyadh and the Kingdom looking to install an embassy in Nicosia.
Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides held talks with his Saudi Arabian counterpart, Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir, during a working visit to Riyadh, where the two men discussed relations between the two countries.
Both men, who are seasoned career diplomats, expressed satisfaction with the way relations are developing between the two countries, according to CNA, especially following President Nicos Anastasiades’ visit to Saudi Arabia earlier this year.
The two ministers also agreed that the opening of a diplomatic mission by Saudi Arabia in Cyprus, in the immediate future, will greatly contribute to achieving the goals set out by both governments.
The Kingdom is seeking support for its ‘Saudi Vision 2030’ and an important element would be good relations with the EU
The two men were in agreement on the possibilities and prospects to further develop bilateral ties and to promote, in the near future, a number of agreements, bilateral cooperation and joint actions. They also agreed to exchange visits, relating in particular to trade, the economy and business.
Christodoulides briefed his counterpart on the Cyprus problem, including efforts to resume the peace process, as well as Turkey’s actions in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The two ministers also exchanged views on regional issues and developments in the Middle East, while CNA sources said the Republic of Cyprus’ capacity as an EU member also was a topic of discussion. Cyprus has repeatedly pointed out to allies that it is an ideal country to help strengthen relations between the EU and partners in the Middle East as well as the Gulf, in order to promote peace, security, and prosperity in the region.
Saudi Arabia, despite facing criticism from partners in the region, has been very active in passing reforms and combating corruption. The Kingdom is now seeking support for its ‘Saudi Vision 2030’ and an important element for that would be good relations with the EU.
The Saudi Arabian minister accepted an invitation to pay an official visit to Cyprus in the immediate future.
Cyprus also plans to hold its chamber forum in Riyadh by the end of the year.
