As the result of a recent election, the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate has named Bishop Sevastianos of Zela as the new Metropolitan of Atlanta. Born in the village of Ano-Zodia, Cyprus, Bishop Sevastianos Skordallos becomes the latest leader of the Metropolis of Atlanta, succeeding Metropolitan Alexios, who stepped down due to health concerns.
Bishop Sevastianos, 69, brings decades of experience and a deep connection to the faith. After completing his early education in Cyprus, he earned degrees in theology and pastoral psychology, studying in Greece, the United States, and the United Kingdom. His career has taken him to parishes across Cyprus, Greece, England, and the U.S., including Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.
His appointment is a point of pride for Cyprus, as his election highlights the global contributions of Cypriots to the Orthodox Church. As a respected cleric and experienced administrator, Bishop Sevastianos has played a vital role in church leadership, serving on various councils and committees, including his current position as Secretary of the Holy Eparchial Synod.
The faithful of the Metropolis of Atlanta welcome a leader who combines spiritual dedication with international experience, while Cypriots worldwide celebrate this milestone for their homeland.
