Cyprus joins European Heritage Days with cultural events

Heritage routes and networks highlighted in Cyprus

Newsroom

The Ministry of Interior and the Department of Town Planning and Housing have announced the launch of the European Heritage Days 2024 events, with the theme "Heritage of Routes, Networks, and Connections." Running from October 12 to 27, 2024, the program will feature guided tours and walking trails in the Akamas region and Salamiou, highlighting traditional dry-stone walls and restored sites repurposed for modern uses.

On October 26 and November 2, events will also take place in Nicosia, Limassol, and Larnaca, including cultural presentations and urban heritage tours in these municipalities.

This year’s events feature four participating communities, along with two independent groups—EASA and Citizens in Power—and the Limassol 2030 organization. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore rural areas, learn about the UNESCO-listed tradition of dry-stone construction, watch artisans at work, and participate in workshops led by skilled instructors. The public will also discover how networks, public spaces, and urban routes promote and develop culture.

Since 1995, Cyprus has been part of the European Heritage Days, a tradition established by the Council of Europe in 1991 and supported by the European Union. The initiative aims to encourage the public to appreciate architectural and cultural heritage by offering access to historic and traditional sites, many of which are typically restricted. The events also include exhibitions, lectures, and cultural performances designed to connect people with local traditions.

Cyprus is part of the European Heritage Days' online platform (http://europeanheritagedays.com), where all participating countries present their events during the same period.
