Cyprus is trying something new this October to help students with severe behavior issues, according to a report by Pavlos Neophytou. For the first time, kids who have been causing serious trouble at school will be moved to a special program outside of their regular schools. This new program will last for three months and is meant to help these students improve their behavior so they can return to their usual schools.
The program is a big step for the Ministry of Education and will include one-on-one teaching and support from specialists like psychologists. The idea is to help these kids with their issues and get them back on track academically and socially.
However, not everyone is on board with the plan. Some experts worry that taking students out of their regular schools might make them feel even more isolated and could lead to more trouble. They also point out that there needs to be a clear plan for measuring how well the program works and making sure it truly helps the students.
The Ministry says they’ve researched similar programs used in other countries and believe this one will work with the right support for students and their families. Initially, the program will involve a small number of students to ensure each one gets the attention they need.
The Ministry is also planning to boost security at schools, including adding more guards and installing security cameras. Teachers have asked for more training on dealing with difficult behavior, and the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute will be offering additional support and resources.
This new program is part of a broader effort to improve how schools handle serious behavior problems and ensure that all students get the support they need.
