Cyprus’ Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas said authorities are still waiting for police findings in the case of missing explosives from a National Guard training exercise, expressing hope that investigators will soon determine their whereabouts.
Speaking on Thursday, Palmas confirmed that the police probe remains ongoing. He said officials expect progress in the coming period that could clarify what happened to the lost materials.
The minister also revealed that the National Guard’s internal review has already been completed. Based on its conclusions, the Chief of the National Guard is expected to take disciplinary action against personnel found to have failed in their duties during the exercise.
Palmas declined to discuss specific responsibilities or provide further details, warning that public commentary could interfere with the integrity of witness testimony and the final findings. He did note, however, that a significant number of individuals have already given statements as part of the investigation.
Asked about the possibility that the explosives are no longer within National Guard control, Palmas acknowledged that all scenarios remain under consideration until the police inquiry produces answers. Authorities, he said, are looking for “light at the end of the tunnel” in efforts to locate the missing explosives.
