A young mother admitted to manslaughter charges in the tragic death of her three-month-old daughter, who was found severely neglected under disturbing conditions in Nicosia on July 28, authorities said Wednesday. Both the 21-year-old mother and the infant’s father, 23, face charges related to the child’s death.
In the Nicosia High Court, the mother pleaded guilty to manslaughter and causing death by negligence. She now awaits sentencing on November 29 and faces a potential life sentence. The father, however, admitted only to causing death by negligence, a lesser charge.
Investigators revealed that the infant had suffered extreme neglect, living in conditions that led to her malnutrition and a range of untreated health issues. The child’s diaper had reportedly not been changed for days, leading to infections, and she bore insect bites on several parts of her body. An inspection of the couple’s apartment also found a lack of basic hygiene items needed for caring for a newborn.
The case began when Nicosia General Hospital staff alerted police on the afternoon of July 28, shortly after the child arrived by ambulance at the emergency department. Medical staff reported suspicious marks on her body, raising concerns about possible neglect. Police officers who responded to the scene documented visible signs of severe neglect and poor care.
Following the hospital visit, authorities swiftly moved to arrest both parents, who were subsequently referred for trial before the Nicosia Criminal Court.
