Police hunt for mother after baby girl's death

Newsroom

A case of severe negligence leading to the death of a three-month-old baby girl has shocked Cyprus. Authorities have arrested the 23-year-old father and are seeking the 22-year-old mother, who is believed to have fled to Greece.

According to reports, the father, of Pakistani descent, was residing illegally in Cyprus. Disturbingly, the baby had not been registered at birth.

Evidence suggests the infant was severely neglected. She showed signs of malnutrition, and insect bites were found on her body, indicating a lack of basic care. The baby's diaper had not been changed for days, leading to further health complications. Authorities also found the apartment devoid of essential hygiene products necessary for newborn care.

The police were alerted on the afternoon of July 28, 2024, when the baby was brought to the emergency department at Nicosia General Hospital and was pronounced dead shortly after. Upon examining the body, police noted signs of serious neglect, prompting them to issue a warrant for the father's arrest.

The 23-year-old father was taken into custody on July 29, and an eight-day detention order was issued by the Nicosia District Court to facilitate the investigation. Meanwhile, a European arrest warrant is expected to be issued for the mother.

The Nicosia CID is continuing to investigate the case, which has been classified as a homicide due to reckless and negligent acts by the parents.
