Cyprus Police will step up roadside inspections on truck and bus drivers from Nov. 11 to 17 as part of a Europe-wide initiative to reduce traffic accidents and promote safer roads. The campaign is part of an effort led by the European Traffic Police Network (ROADPOL), which includes law enforcement agencies across Europe.
Throughout the week, police officers will conduct comprehensive checks, examining documents, vehicle safety, and driving practices. The inspections aim to ensure that drivers and companies adhere to regulations, from speed limits and working hours to the technical upkeep of vehicles. Police will closely inspect driver records, including tachographs, which monitor driving hours, and speed limiters, which cap a vehicle’s speed.
Authorities will emphasize the importance of compliance, offering education on safe practices alongside enforcement. Officers will look especially for violations that are common causes of severe and fatal accidents, such as speeding and mobile phone use while driving.
According to a police statement, these checks are part of ongoing efforts to curb road fatalities and make roads safer for all users, targeting high-risk behaviors in the commercial transport sector. The intensified scrutiny aims not only to enforce safety rules but also to educate drivers on the risks posed by lapses in compliance.
