Eighteen divers pulled 1.8 tons of trash from the bottom of Kato Paphos harbor in just one hour during a cleanup organized by the Cyprus Ports Authority, according to the environmental group AKTI.
AKTI spokesperson Anna Tselepu described the scene as “disheartening,” noting the discovery of 32 car wheels, eight motorcycle wheels, and four truck wheels among the debris. The organization helped document and record all the items recovered.
The operation was led by the Cyprus Ports Authority, with divers from Cydive Cyprus, the Paphos Municipality, and Deputy Mayor Angelos Onisiforou taking part.
Students from the American University of Beirut and children from the Pafos FC Academy also pitched in, lending a hand in collecting the debris, AKTI said.
The cleanup is part of ongoing efforts to protect marine life and maintain the harbor’s environment, highlighting how community participation can make a visible impact in just a short time.
