EAC issues alert over fake email scam

Phishing emails falsely claim unpaid bills and threaten power cuts.

Newsroom

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) clarifies that these messages do not originate from the organization and are an attempt at electronic fraud (phishing).

The EAC urges consumers to be cautious of misleading messages alleging unpaid electricity bills.

The Police are also advising the public to exercise particular caution regarding fraudulent emails that falsely appear to have been sent by the EAC.

The Cybercrime Unit of the Police Headquarters has received a number of complaints from citizens about deceptive emails that falsely appear to originate from the EAC.

Specifically, recipients are instructed to follow a link in order to make an immediate payment of their electricity bill, allegedly to avoid disconnection of the power supply.

The perpetrators’ aim is to deceive the public, steal banking information, and misappropriate funds.

The public is urged to be especially vigilant and not to respond to such messages if received.
