A new wave of political theater is unfolding in Cyprus’ occupied north, as Turkey prepares to inaugurate a grandiose complex housing the so-called “presidency” and “parliament” of the breakaway regime, just days before Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to the occupied north of Cyprus.
A video widely circulated on social media showcases drone footage and sleek renderings of the upcoming buildings, which will be officially opened by Erdogan on May 3. The facilities, located in the occupied area of Ayios Dometios, are touted as symbols of permanence and control, despite being built on disputed land.
According to Turkish-Cypriot media, the sprawling project spans 350 acres and carries a price tag of 586 million Turkish lira. It’s being framed as a gift from Ankara, but critics see it as yet another attempt to cement Turkey’s grip on the north and further entrench the division of the island.
“This weekend we will be at ‘TRNC’ to inaugurate the completed works and share the enthusiasm of the young people at TEKNOFEST,” Erdogan said after a recent Cabinet meeting, using the abbreviation often used by Ankara for the unrecognized “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.” He also promised to announce more investments and projects for the Turkish-Cypriot community.
