Five villages with the same name, one shared heart

Historic Prasteio partnership unites communities across free and occupied areas.

Five villages across Cyprus that share the name, "Prasteio", are taking a joint step to strengthen cooperation and preserve their shared heritage. Two of these communities are located in the island’s occupied areas, adding a symbolic dimension to the initiative.

Although it is not unusual for Cypriot villages to share names, having five inhabited communities with the same name is considered one of the highest such occurrences on the island. By comparison, the name Agios Georgios appears in six locations, but one of those settlements is abandoned and lies within the buffer zone.

The five Prasteio communities—Avdimou, Kellaki, Kelokedara, Famagusta, and Morphou—have decided to formalize their collaboration. Their local councils aim to work together on cultural, social, and heritage-related initiatives, strengthening ties despite geographical and political divisions.

To mark this cooperation, representatives from all five villages will gather on Sunday, March 22, at the community hall in Prasteio Avdimou. During the event, they will sign a twinning agreement that establishes an official partnership between them.

The program will include addresses by community leaders, a presentation of photographic material showcasing each village, and a cultural segment featuring traditional Cypriot dances. Turkish Cypriots have also been invited to attend, an effort to promote inclusivity and shared cultural identity.
