Authorities are continuing to examine a large food poisoning outbreak connected to a wedding reception in Limassol after dozens of guests became ill.

According to available information, 74 people reported symptoms following the event, including children. Several individuals required hospital treatment.

Health Services Director Herodotos Herodotou said the matter came to the attention of officials on 2 June after a complaint was submitted regarding a wedding reception held on 31 May at a venue in Limassol.

Investigators established that around 400 guests attended the reception. Food and desserts served at the event had been supplied by a catering company based in Limassol.

Laboratory testing carried out on samples from hospitalised patients reportedly identified three types of bacteria. Reports indicate that Salmonella and Campylobacter were among those detected. Officials are still waiting for the results of inspections and testing carried out at both the catering facility and the reception venue.

The investigation has involved several teams tasked with interviewing guests, inspecting the catering operation and collecting samples from the reception site. Health authorities have also coordinated with hospitals and the State General Laboratory as part of the inquiry.

Cases have been recorded in more than one district. Data provided by the Health Services show that 39 people became ill in Limassol, with 15 requiring hospitalisation. In Paphos, 35 people reported symptoms and three were admitted to hospital. Officials say these figures could change as additional information becomes available.

Reports state that neither the bride nor the groom became sick. Information gathered during the investigation suggests that neither consumed chicken served at the reception.

Authorities have secured food items matching those served during the event for testing. The premises involved have also had their operations suspended while the inquiry continues.

Further laboratory findings are expected in the coming days and will be assessed alongside witness interviews to determine which foods were consumed and to establish the source of the contamination.
