Compares it to Turkey's threats to annex the occupied territories

Source: Announcements

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry condemns Russia's annexation of Ukrainian territories by Russia, calling it illegal, invalid and contrary to the fundamental principles of international law. At the same time, it compares the event to Turkey's escalating threats of the annexation of the occupied territories.

The Foreign Ministry's statement

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus condemns the illegal annexation of Ukrainian territory by Russia.

The recent "referendums" held in the Russian-occupied Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhya regions of Ukraine are illegal, invalid and contrary to fundamental principles of international law.

All UN members have an obligation to follow and respect the provisions of the UN Charter. The threat or use of force, occupation, secession and annexation of the territory of one state by another are flagrant violations of international law.

The Republic of Cyprus attaches particular importance to issues concerning principles of international law, due to Turkey's escalating threats to annex its occupied territories and will therefore continue to maintain a principled stance.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates its support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.
