High school ''work week'' returns, students get hands-on experience

Intern for three days, earn points, get hands-on work experience, and parents even get a cash allowance!

By Hector Georgiou

After more than a decade, Cyprus is bringing back the “Work Week” for high school students, a hands-on program designed to give teens a taste of the working world. The initiative, which was last run in 2013, is part of the Ministry of Education’s broader Recovery and Resilience Plan.

The program kicks off on February 18 and will run for six weeks until March 3, with a rolling schedule for each school. Students will spend three consecutive days in a real work placement, then return to school for two days of seminars, which don’t have to be back-to-back. These activities are part of each school’s larger “Three-Day Work” initiative.

Work hours won’t go past 1:35 p.m., and the ministry says that any student who can’t land a placement will stay at school and take part in alternative activities. During the three days on the job, teachers will supervise but won’t have teaching duties, keeping the focus entirely on hands-on experience.

Perks for Students and Families

Those who complete the full program, three days at work plus two days of school seminars, will earn five points in the DDK program (one point per day). Parents will also receive a financial allowance paid directly to their bank accounts.

Employers Wanted

The Ministry is calling on organizations and businesses interested in hosting students to sign up through an online form on the Ministry’s official website under the Directorate of Secondary General Education.
