The Council of Ministers approved a package of measures affecting Cyprus’s contract soldiers (SYOP) during its meeting on Tuesday, announcing changes aimed at strengthening staffing levels and improving incentives within the National Guard.

Speaking at the start of the session, President Nikos Christodoulides said reinforcing the country’s defensive capabilities remains a central government priority. As part of this effort, the Cabinet agreed to extend the maximum age for SYOP personnel to remain in service, raising it from 42 to 57 years. At the same time, the eligibility age for new applicants will increase, allowing candidates up to 35 years old to apply instead of the previous limit of 27.

The government also introduced a new merit-based pathway that will allow SYOP members to advance into contract non-commissioned officer positions. This process will include written examinations, enabling successful candidates to progress through the ranks up to Sergeant Major.

In addition, the Cabinet approved an increase in the special monthly allowance provided to SYOP personnel. The general allowance will rise from €100 to €150. For those serving in specialized units, such as the Mountain Commando Companies (LOK), Underwater Demolition Teams (OYK), demining sections, and nursing roles, the allowance will increase from €200 to €250.

President Christodoulides linked the decisions to the government’s broader economic policy, stating that improved economic performance has created the fiscal space needed to invest not only in defense and security, but also in areas such as education, healthcare, and housing.
