Despite strict regulations prohibiting the hunting of skylarks after February 10, illegal hunting of the endangered birds continues. The Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS) has reported multiple incidents over the past week, observing groups of hunters targeting the protected species.
According to CABS, their staff alerted the authorities upon discovering illegal hunting activity. However, most of the poachers fled the area before law enforcement arrived. Nevertheless, two hunters were apprehended after being caught using electronic decoys—an illegal method—to lure skylarks. Authorities confiscated one firearm and the prohibited device used in the operation.
In a separate incident, CABS filmed a bird trapper setting up approximately 60 limesticks, an illegal trapping method, and reported the case to the police.
Cyprus has long struggled with illegal bird hunting, and conservationists continue to urge stricter enforcement of wildlife protection laws. Authorities are expected to increase efforts to combat poaching and protect endangered bird species in the region.
