Speaker of the Parliament, Annita Demetriou, emphasized the need for a strengthened national strategy supporting individuals with autism during a visit to the Larnaca Prototype Adult Intervention Center on Friday. Demetriou stressed the state's responsibility to provide adequate support and noted that the current strategy requires improvement.
Demetriou met with center staff and parliamentary colleagues to discuss the strategy and its implementation. She acknowledged the dedication of the caregivers at the center and reiterated the commitment of the House of Representatives to supporting both the individuals with autism and the center itself.
A significant challenge highlighted during the visit was the financial burden of rent for the center's facilities. Demetriou expressed a desire to find a permanent solution, potentially through sponsorships and state funding, to secure a privately owned building for the center. She indicated a willingness to work with the Mayor of Larnaca and other relevant authorities to explore available options.
Tasoula Georgiadou, President of the Pancyprian Association for People with Autism, expressed gratitude for the support and echoed the call for a dedicated building, citing the substantial monthly rent costs incurred by autism centers nationwide. Georgiadou challenged those present to work together to achieve the goal of a privately owned facility in Larnaca.
Demetriou concluded the visit by presenting a financial contribution to the Larnaca Prototype Adult Intervention Center.
