There has been a rise in reports of animal poisonings, particularly affecting pets, according to a statement from the Animal Party Cyprus.
The Party expresses concern over the fact that, although the active substance Methomyl has been withdrawn from use in the industry as part of the approval process under Regulation (EC) No. 1107/2009, it is still being illegally imported from the occupied areas into the free zones of the Republic of Cyprus. This illegal importation has led to methomyl being accessible to the public, despite its prohibition for use as a pesticide under the plant protection products category.
"Unfortunately, we are witnessing this substance being brought into the free areas, with well-known and dangerous consequences. As a result, citizens have access to this toxic poison," the statement reads. "It is important for the public to understand that the presence of such poisons in the environment has lasting effects, with severe consequences throughout the food chain."
The Animal Party Cyprus has urged the Police and Customs to increase checks and conduct thorough inspections of all individuals passing through checkpoints. "We hope that these illegal imports and their misuse do not result in further victims, both animal and human," the statement concludes.
