Larnaca bus company calls strike unjustified

Company says it has complied with agreements, warns strike harms commuters, and calls for enforcement of Industrial Relations Code.

Larnaca Public Transport (LPT) on Tuesday called a 48-hour strike by its drivers “unjustified,” saying it had taken steps to avoid the work stoppage.

The strike, which began Tuesday and will continue through Wednesday, affects bus services across the city and district of Larnaca.

In a statement, the company said it made “constructive proposals” during negotiations and urged the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance to enforce the Industrial Relations Code to end what it called a “deadlock.”

The company said the ministry has clarified that when unions believe there is a violation of a collective agreement, they must present evidence to the Department of Labour Relations, which is the only body that can determine whether a breach has occurred. LPT said the department has not found any violation.

“Despite this and despite the unions’ announcement of measures, after lengthy consultations our company acted constructively by submitting realistic and improved proposals within the framework of the collective agreement and legislation, aiming to avoid conflict,” the statement said.

The company described itself as a “model” in applying competitive employment terms and respecting agreements. It criticized the strike as an unnecessary action that harms citizens who depend on public transport.

“The only way out of the current impasse is the application of the provisions set out in the Industrial Relations Code, which we urge the ministry to implement faithfully and without delay,” the statement said.
