Police intervened to defuse rising tensions after a mayoral debate between candidates Nikos Nikolaides and Yannis Armeftis on Tuesday night at the Lannitio Lyceum amphitheater.
Hundreds attended the debate, but the atmosphere soured once it concluded. Disagreements and reactions among attendees escalated, prompting police officers on the scene to step in and restore order.
Later, police received a complaint from an attendee who claimed he was attacked by an unknown individual as he was leaving the venue. Authorities reported that the complainant did not sustain any serious injuries.
The mayoral candidates, Nicolaides and Armeytis, are set to face off in the upcoming municipal elections on June 9, 2024.
