The long-awaited restoration of the Liopetri River is gaining momentum, with key government officials meeting behind closed doors to discuss how to move the project forward. The Agriculture Committee recently gathered to tackle the challenges faced by local fishermen and to get the restoration back on track.

Minister of the Interior, Constantinos Ioannou, shared updates on the steps taken by the Ministry and the Department of Planning and Zoning (DZP) to ensure the project moves ahead as quickly as possible. To speed up the process, the project has been broken down into phases. The first phase, which involves building a paved road, is expected to be completed by June 2025. Meanwhile, the construction of shelters is set to begin in April 2025.

The government is also stepping in to help the local fishing community. In collaboration with the Minister of Agriculture and the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ioannou confirmed that financial aid will soon be available for both commercial fishermen and restaurant owners impacted by the ongoing work. These proposals will be discussed in upcoming Cabinet meetings.

Ioannou emphasized that the goal is clear: completing the restoration project will not only improve the area around Liopetri and Ayia Napa but also bring positive changes to the entire Famagusta District. With strong local and governmental support, the Liopetri River restoration is set to benefit the community for years to come.
