Livadia residents refuse sewage fees over unequal charges

Homeowners face €345 charge for new system; dispute over cost allocation continues.

Newsroom

Residents of the Livadia self-housing development are refusing to pay a bill for a new sewage system, arguing the charges are unfair and pointing to differences in how similar projects have been handled elsewhere.

Homeowners were first billed €160 each, which they did not pay. When late fees were added, bringing the total to €345, the residents also refused the surcharge.

They say they are being treated differently from other communities where new sewage infrastructure was installed without passing the cost onto households. Many Livadia homes already have independent sewage treatment plants, which are now scheduled for decommissioning, yet residents are being charged the same fees as areas just beginning to receive municipal service.

The new plan calls for a central sewage plant to serve Livadia, Aradippou, Oroklini, and Pyla, along with a network of pipelines. Officials say the project is part of a broader effort to modernize local sanitation systems.

The issue has been discussed several times in the Parliamentary Refugee Committee but remains unresolved. A decision is expected after the Larnaca Local Government Organization meets on October 22.

The E.O.A. has proposed that the Ministry of Interior cover half the cost, with the remainder determined by the council. Residents hope an alternative funding solution will be found.
