Lute expected in Cyprus to test the waters

The UNSG's special advisor Jane Holl Lute will be beginning consultations with all parties involved in the Cyprus Problem to check whether preconditions for new talks are there

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has instructed his special advisor Jane Holl Lute to begin consultations with all parties involved in the Cyprus problem in order to determine whether the preconditions are in place to convene an informal 5+1 meeting on Cyprus.

A diplomatic source said the US diplomat should be expected in Cyprus within the next fortnight, while contacts with the guarantor powers of the UK, Greece and Turkey will probably be held from a distance.

Guterres has been waiting the Turkish Cypriot community to pick their new leader in order to launch efforts resume, at least informally at first, Cyprus talks.

But with Ersin Tatar now assuming the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community, the risks of derailing decades-long efforts for reaching a federal solution have intensified.

Guterres has repeatedly stressed that he would not be convening a meeting on Cyprus before he was convinced by his associates that all parties are willing to engage in a productive negotiations process.
