Police in Limassol are investigating an online fraud case after a 59-year-old man was allegedly deceived into transferring €90,000 for a vehicle that never existed.
According to investigators, the man found a car advertised for sale on an online marketplace and entered discussions with what appeared to be a vehicle sales company. The two sides agreed on a purchase price of €90,000, which included shipping the car to Cyprus from another European country.
The buyer subsequently transferred the full amount to a bank account in a different European country, following instructions provided by the supposed sellers.
The scam came to light when the man later carried out his own checks and discovered that the company behind the sale was not a legitimate business. Realising he had fallen victim to fraud, he reported the matter to the Limassol Criminal Investigation Department.
The case is being handled by the Economic Crime Investigation Office of the Limassol CID.
Following the complaint, police urged the public to take extra care when making purchases online, particularly when dealing with unfamiliar individuals or businesses. Authorities advise consumers to verify the legitimacy of sellers and companies before sending money or completing transactions.
