European Parliament funding for a €2,300 rental space linked to MEP Phidias Panayiotou is raising eyebrows after video footage suggested the property may be more of a private residence than a professional office.
Panayiotou has said the rent, split between him (€700) and the Parliament (€1,600), is for office space. However, the video shows a swimming pool and interiors styled like a home, decorated by a well-known YouTuber who resides there with their partner. The décor appears far from typical office surroundings, calling into question whether the space is primarily used for work purposes.
The property, according to the footage, includes personal touches and furnishings more in line with a private residence than a formal office, sparking discussion about the proper use of European Parliament funds for MEP office rentals.
While Panayiotou has defended the arrangement, critics argue the visuals make it difficult to reconcile the space with the professional role it is meant to serve. The European Parliament has strict rules on how public funds should be allocated, particularly for office-related expenses.
