Controversy resurfaces weeks after recording, as Panayiotou links renewed criticism to political factors.

MEP and content creator Fidias Panayiotou has released a public video statement responding to the backlash sparked by remarks made during a recent podcast episode featuring athlete Loizos Chrysanthou. The controversy centered on a discussion about the Paralympic S14 category, during which the term “crazy” was used in reference to athletes with intellectual disabilities.

The exchange quickly drew criticism from a wide range of groups, including sports federations, political parties, and organizations representing people with disabilities. Many argued that the language used was inappropriate and harmful, particularly given the subject matter.

In his response video, Panayiotou acknowledges that his choice of words was wrong and states clearly that such terminology should never be used to describe individuals living with disabilities, disorders, or illnesses. He expresses regret for the comment and offers a direct apology to athletes competing in the S14 Paralympic classification.

Beyond apologizing, Panayiotou reflects more broadly on social responsibility, suggesting that the incident also highlights a wider societal failure to speak about disability with sufficient respect and care. He argues that poor language habits are often the result of long-standing neglect and lack of inclusive discourse.

He also questions why the controversy escalated months after the podcast was recorded, noting that the episode originally aired on November 29, 2025. According to Panayiotou, the renewed attention may be connected to shifting political dynamics, specifically pointing to the rising support, now reportedly above 10 percent, for the movement he associates with “Direct Democracy.”
