Ministries of Labor and Health outline efforts in the National Strategy for autism

Government progress and future plans in response to Autism Action Plan

The Ministries of Labor and Health have outlined their efforts toward implementing the National Strategy and Action Plan for Autism (2024-2028) in a recent response to AKEL MP George Koukoumas.

The Ministry of Labor is actively supporting individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) through a range of initiatives. Employment Advisors have been appointed in each district to help those with ASD who can work independently, with referrals being made by the Department of Social Integration of Persons with Disabilities (DSIPD). The Public Employment Service (PES) provides personalized job placement and training support, and a specialized system has been created to track individuals with ASD in the employment sector.

A significant part of the strategy involves the creation of an electronic national platform for autism. This platform, developed in collaboration with the Deputy Ministry of Research, aims to provide crucial information and services for individuals with ASD. A National Autism Conference held in December 2024 brought together professionals, parents, and government representatives to discuss further progress.

The Ministry also supports a Disability Employment Incentive Scheme to enhance job opportunities for people with disabilities, including those with ASD. Additionally, a proposed subcommittee on Education and Employment will help improve integration into education and the workforce for individuals with ASD.

The Ministry of Health is working on implementing the ASD diagnostic program, using the M-CHAT R tool for screening children aged 18-30 months, set for rollout in the second half of 2025. The General Health Insurance Organization (GHIO) is continuously revising services, with updates made to speech therapy provisions in 2023.

The Cyprus State Health Services Organization (OKYPY) provides essential inpatient mental health care for individuals with ASD, especially those facing acute issues. Although no new inpatient structures are planned for the 2025-2028 period, psychological support services will continue, with potential expansion if demand increases.
