Cyprus dairy producers welcome new quota on blended halloumi

The Cyprus Dairy Producers’ Association has welcomed a new government decree that sets limits on the amount of blended halloumi cheese allowed in production.

The decree, issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, caps blended halloumi, cheese made with a mix of cow, sheep, and goat milk, at 20% from March 26 to July 31 and reduces it to 15% from August 1 to December 31. The association called the decision a step in the right direction, emphasizing that quotas should be based on accurate production data.

The group explained that the new limits reflect the availability of goat and sheep milk, now tracked monthly, ensuring both local and international demand for halloumi is met. It credited the introduction of milk tracking software last October as a key measure in protecting exports and securing halloumi’s place in the global market.

According to official 2024 data, halloumi exports reached 42,427 tons, generating €324 million, an increase from 39,078 tons and €315 million in 2023. The association stressed that expanding exports is essential to the prosperity of everyone involved in production and, ultimately, to the Cypriot economy.

"This success is due to the Ministry of Agriculture’s targeted efforts, as well as the commitment of both Minister Dr. Maria Panayiotou and President Nikos Christodoulides to protect PDO halloumi," the statement said. The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status safeguards halloumi’s authenticity and reputation.

The association also praised the work of the Halloumi Protection Committee, which includes key industry players and is chaired by Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KEVE) President Stavros Stavrou.

Looking ahead, the dairy producers reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the industry, with a focus on boosting exports, making full use of domestic milk production, and maintaining more than 15,000 jobs.

"Halloumi production isn’t just a major part of our GDP, it’s a pillar of our economy, ensuring stability and growth in Cyprus’ agri-food sector," the statement concluded.
