Newsroom

Four mobile units are set to embark on a crucial mission across Cyprus, collecting hazardous household waste as part of a groundbreaking initiative established by the Ministry of Agriculture. This significant program, known as Action 3 within the "Management of Hazardous Waste from Households" project, aims to tackle the challenge of managing hazardous waste and promote public awareness.

These mobile units will play a pivotal role in educating citizens and ensuring the proper disposal of hazardous waste in designated areas. The first stop on this vital journey is scheduled for October 16, 2023, at the Municipality of Nicosia, with a comprehensive plan spanning six months, lasting until March 2024. The Nicosia Development Agency will oversee the meticulous execution of this program.

Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, Petros Xenophontos, estimates that approximately 250 visits will be made to municipalities and communities all across Cyprus. Detailed updates about the schedule can be found on the project's official website and the Department of Environment's platform.

During these visits, the public will be informed about the proper categorization and management of hazardous household waste. Specially designed containers will be available for depositing various types of waste, including batteries, small electrical and electronic devices, pesticides, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, cleaning products, inks, printer toners, paints, solvents, and lubricants. The mobile units will remain stationed at each location for 2-3 days before moving to the next site.

Nicosia Mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis acknowledges the importance of this initiative in enhancing municipal waste management efforts in Nicosia.
