The recurring power outages experienced on Monday at the Nicosia-Keryneia District Court have once again emphasized the inadequacy of court buildings in Nicosia and the urgent need for new judicial facilities in the capital, according to a statement issued by the Cyprus Bar Association (CBA) on Monday.
On March 10, 2025, the Nicosia-Keryneia District Court experienced repeated power outages, disrupting court operations and the i-justice electronic system. This caused significant inconvenience to judges, lawyers, registry officers, and citizens.
"It is inconceivable that, in 2025, the courts in our country lack the necessary infrastructure and facilities to ensure the proper functioning of the justice system," the statement emphasized.
The announcement also reiterated the unsuitability of court buildings in Nicosia and called for the immediate establishment of new judicial facilities in the capital.
"We hope that, in line with the recent promises made by the honorable Minister of Transport, Communications, and Works, the necessary studies and actions for acquiring, converting, and relocating the courts to the former FBME building will soon be undertaken and implemented," the statement added.
Finally, the statement stressed that issues related to the daily administrative operation of the courts should fall under the responsibility of a new Independent Judicial Service. This body would be accountable for, among other things, infrastructure and facilities, in line with the recommendation of Irish experts, which has been pending since 2018.
