Nationwide emergency alert system now expected in June

Civil Defence says public warning platform delayed but nearing completion.

Civil Defence authorities say Cyprus is nearing completion of a nationwide public alert system designed to quickly inform residents during emergencies, with the rollout expected in early June.

Civil Defence Commander Maria Pappa said the government is currently at a strong stage of preparation for the system, though she acknowledged that some shortcomings still need to be addressed. The platform aims to deliver fast and reliable warnings to the public during crisis situations.

Pappa made the remarks on Thursday following a meeting with DIKO leader Nikolas Papadopoulos, where preparedness and public safety measures were discussed.

According to Pappa, the country must remain ready to respond to a wide range of potential emergencies. She stressed that Civil Defence continues to focus on prevention and preparation for the public while avoiding unnecessary alarm. Despite existing challenges, she said authorities are strengthening their capabilities with support from the state and cooperation from political parties.

She also urged the public to pay attention to official guidance issued during emergencies. Staying informed, she said, helps citizens respond more effectively and increases their ability to cope with potential dangers.

The upcoming alert system is intended to improve how authorities communicate urgent information to the population. Once operational, it will provide a more advanced method of delivering warnings quickly and reliably.

In the meantime, a recent test carried out by the Deputy Ministry of Innovation, working alongside mobile network providers, served as a temporary measure. The trial revealed some technical issues, Pappa said, and feedback has been submitted so officials can identify problems and implement solutions.

Further testing is expected soon, with authorities planning additional trial runs in the coming days as development continues toward the system’s official launch.
