Nearly one in seven Cypriots struggle to keep homes warm

Cyprus records a higher rate of energy poverty than the EU average despite overall improvement across the bloc.

A significant share of households in Cyprus continue to face difficulties keeping their homes warm, according to new figures released by Eurostat for 2024. The data indicate that 14.6% of Cyprus’s population reported being unable to adequately heat their living spaces, a level well above the European Union average.

Across the EU as a whole, 9.2% of residents experienced similar problems during 2024. While still substantial, this marks an improvement of 1.4 percentage points compared with 2023, suggesting a gradual easing of energy-related hardship in several member states.

Energy poverty remains most acute in southern and eastern Europe. Greece and Bulgaria recorded the highest proportions, with 19% of their populations unable to maintain sufficient warmth at home. These figures represent slight improvements from the previous year, when the shares stood at 19.2% in Greece and 20.7% in Bulgaria. Lithuania followed closely, with 18% affected, while Spain reported a rate of 17.5%.

At the other end of the scale, northern and central European countries showed far lower levels of difficulty. Finland reported the lowest rate in the EU at 2.7%. Poland and Slovenia each recorded 3.3%, while Estonia and Luxembourg both stood at 3.6%.

The latest Eurostat data showcase persistent disparities in living conditions across the EU, even as overall indicators show modest progress in reducing the number of households struggling with basic energy needs.
