A foreign man who was serving a prison sentence in Nicosia died of liver failure just days after he was admitted in hospital.

According to local media, a 40-year-old foreign national was serving a prison sentence at Nicosia Central Prisons where he was being monitored by medics for chronic liver disease.

The Prisons Department said an investigation into a sudden death incident had been launched

The Prisons Department said the inmate was rushed to the Emergency Room last Thursday where doctors said the patient had elevated enzymes in his liver.

Local media said the prisoner, who had no known relatives in Cyprus, passed away at Nicosia General Hospital after his condition had worsened during the medical treatment.

Police told Knews they had no information regarding the incident while the Prisons Department, which is an independent government agency overseeing the incarceration of criminals, said a probe had been launched to investigate a sudden death.

The correctional facility also said it was expressing its deep condolences over the incident.

No information was made known about the nationality of the prisoner or the nature of the offenses for which he was serving a sentence.
