For generations of Nicosia residents, the Municipal Garden has been more than just a patch of green in the heart of the capital. It has been a place for childhood memories, family walks, school trips, and quiet moments away from the city’s busy streets.
Now, after more than a century of serving as one of Nicosia’s most recognizable landmarks, the Municipal Garden is set for a major transformation.
The Municipality of Nicosia has announced plans to launch an architectural competition for the renovation of the Nicosia Municipal Garden, with the project estimated to cost €4.1 million plus VAT.
The competition is expected to be announced by the end of summer 2026, with the aim of finding the best design for the future of the historic space.
Presenting the plans, the Nicosia Inter-Municipal Development Works (DAEL) said the project represents a major investment in the future of the capital and aims to create a greener, more welcoming, and accessible public space.
Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos said the Municipal Garden holds deep historical, architectural, and emotional value for the city.
“For more than a century, it has hosted the memories and everyday lives of Nicosia’s residents,” he said, stressing that any changes must respect the garden’s history and identity.
The mayor added that the project reflects the municipality’s wider goal of creating a capital that is greener, more sustainable, and more focused on people.
Municipal Secretary Myria Pilakouta described the renovation as the “rebirth” of a historic city landmark, with the goal of creating a modern public space that connects Nicosia’s past with future generations.
The plans aim to preserve the garden’s historic character while improving its use as a place for recreation, culture, and relaxation.
For many residents, the announcement brings back memories of a familiar part of city life, from children feeding animals and playing in the garden to families enjoying weekend walks.
The challenge now will be finding the balance between preserving those memories and creating a space that meets the needs of a modern Nicosia.
The municipality said the renovated Municipal Garden will remain a public space for everyone, designed to bring nature, culture, and community closer together in the heart of the capital.
