Parents of children with disabilities have raised concerns about facilities in special schools across Nicosia, Limassol, and Larnaca, according to AKEL MP Christos Christofides.
Speaking before the parliamentary education committee, Christofides said that some schools are using storage rooms as classrooms due to space limitations.
“Every day, we receive calls from special schools reporting that there is insufficient classroom space, and storage areas are being repurposed,” he said.
Christofides also noted challenges related to support staff, including aides for children with disabilities, citing an outdated system that makes it difficult to fill certain positions.
Staffing and Administration
The MP highlighted ongoing staffing issues, including delays in issuing contracts and shortages in administrative roles. “Several schools have started the term with new contracts still being processed. Many schools, particularly in primary and pre-primary education, are being managed by acting heads instead of appointed principals,” he said.
