Visitors to Agia Triada beach in the Kapparis area got an unusual surprise this week when the normally blue waters turned striking shades of red.
The dramatic change was caused by heavy rains from Storm Byron, which washed soil and sediment from the land into the sea. When large amounts of dirt and clay are carried by runoff into shallow coastal waters, they can temporarily tint the water, creating unusual colors like red, brown, or even orange.
Residents and tourists quickly captured the phenomenon on video, sharing it on social media, where it drew awe and curiosity. While visually impressive, such color changes are temporary and harmless, usually disappearing once the sediment settles or is washed further out to sea.
According to local experts, this type of phenomenon isn’t extremely common but isn’t unheard of either. Coastal areas with loose soil or clay-rich terrain are more likely to see dramatic shifts in water color after heavy rainfall. In Cyprus, it has been observed occasionally after storms or intense rainfall, though the vivid red hue at Agia Triada this week made it particularly striking.
For beachgoers, it was a rare, Instagram-worthy moment, proof that nature can paint even familiar spots in surprising new colors.
