UPDATE and VIDEO (0726 Cyprus): A suspected military drone strike at the British Bases in Akrotiri triggered a tense overnight security alert early Sunday, sending residents fleeing their homes and placing the base on full alert amid rising regional tensions.

An explosion was reported shortly after midnight on the airstrip at the Akrotiri sovereign base area, believed to have been caused by a falling military drone, according to local authorities and communications circulated among base personnel.

While no injuries were reported, the incident rattled nearby communities, with many residents abandoning their homes as a precaution.

People living in the Akrotiri municipal district said they were jolted awake by a loud blast, followed soon after by aircraft taking off from the base. Roads leading into the area were quickly sealed off by Base Police, adding to the sense of urgency.

Kourion Mayor Pantelis Georgiou told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that residents were advised to leave their homes if they felt unsafe, with some spending the night at Limassol General Hospital after guidance issued following instructions from President Nikos Christodoulides.

Georgiou said he personally went to the municipal building to inform residents that facilities were available for those wishing to relocate temporarily.

“A large number of residents left the area during the night,” he said.

Emails reportedly sent by the British Bases to staff and their families, later made public, instructed people to remain indoors due to a security threat. The message advised individuals to take cover under sturdy furniture and stay away from windows.

A follow-up communication referred to a drone striking the airstrip, causing minor material damage but no casualties.

The British Bases have not officially confirmed details of the incident, directing inquiries instead to the press office of the UK Ministry of Defence, which had not issued a public statement at the time of publication.

Authorities have not announced additional safety measures, but the situation remains under close monitoring as investigations into the incident continue.

Unconfirmed reports emerging on social media late Sunday suggested that Iranian weaponry may have struck the British air facility at RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus, though authorities have not verified the claims.

Several independent open-source accounts posted about a possible incident, with some alleging a drone impact at the base near Limassol. Others referenced early indications of an explosion linked to a suspected Iranian drone strike. None of these claims have been officially substantiated.

Separately, one news outlet previously reported that a “security threat” had been declared at the British installation. According to the outlet, personnel received instructions to remain indoors, keep away from windows, and shelter behind sturdy furniture until further notice.

As of now, officials have not confirmed that any strike or blast occurred at RAF Akrotiri. Available video circulating online remains unverified.

RAF Akrotiri, situated within the UK’s Western Sovereign Base Area on Cyprus’s southern coast, is a major operational hub supporting British air missions across the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean.
