Slovak Ambassador Martin Bezák highlighted Slovakia's significant role in promoting peace and security in Cyprus during an event celebrating the Constitution Day of the Slovak Republic. In his speech, Bezák emphasized Slovakia's commitment to maintaining the ceasefire and fostering dialogue between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, particularly through its contributions to the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

Bezák underscored that Slovakia, despite being a small nation, values its sovereignty and independence, which is reflected in its foreign policy. He expressed concern over the global trend of enforcing singular political views, which he believes undermines democracy and threatens international peace.

Slovakia's involvement in Cyprus, according to Bezák, is deeply rooted in humanitarian concerns, with a focus on alleviating civilian suffering caused by conflict. He reminded the audience of the tragic events in Cyprus during 1963-64 and the Turkish invasion in 1974, which left the island divided—a division that persists to this day.

Bezák praised the nearly 4,500 Slovak peacekeepers who have served in Cyprus, particularly in the most sensitive areas of the buffer zone. He also highlighted the role of the Slovak Embassy in facilitating nearly 450 bicommunal meetings between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties, aimed at fostering reconciliation and understanding.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied the northern part of the island. Despite numerous rounds of UN-led peace talks, a resolution to the conflict remains elusive, with the last significant negotiations in 2017 ending without an agreement.
