SMS scam alert: Authorities warn of cryptocurrency messages

Police confirmed that messages are fake and part of a scam

Newsroom

Cyprus’s Cybercrime Unit has issued a warning about a new SMS scam targeting citizens. The scam involves sending bulk text messages from fraudulent sources impersonating a cryptocurrency exchange.

The messages claim unauthorized access to the recipient’s account from another country and urge recipients to contact a suspicious phone number provided in the message.

The goal of the scammers is to deceive individuals into disclosing their account login credentials. The police have confirmed that these messages are fake and part of a scam.

Authorities advise the public to exercise caution, avoid responding to such messages, use two-factor authentication for all online accounts, and never share login details with anyone.
