A powerful storm on Saturday brought significant damage to Cyprus, with Limassol and Paphos provinces hit hardest. The Fire Service responded to 54 calls for assistance across the regions, primarily dealing with fallen trees, road hazards, and flooding.
In Limassol, firefighters managed 23 incidents, including fallen trees, road obstructions, and clearing storm drains. Six flood response teams were deployed. Paphos saw a higher number of calls—28—addressing similar issues along with the rescue of people trapped in vehicles. Nine flood response teams assisted in the area. In Larnaca, three calls for drain clearing were handled by one team. Fire Service efforts were supported by local municipal crews, Civil Defense, and the volunteer group Support Cy in Paphos.
Heavy rains also caused flooding in parts of Paphos General Hospital, with water seeping into the Thalassemia Unit on the third floor. According to the State Health Services Organization (OKYPY), blocked gutters on the fourth-floor terrace, where construction work is ongoing, appear to be the cause. Restoration measures were activated immediately, and the contractor has been called to implement corrective actions. No patients were at risk, and other areas of the hospital remained unaffected.
In the aftermath, the Ministry of Agriculture announced it would send teams to evaluate damage to livestock facilities in Limassol, with preliminary reports indicating damage to four farming sites. Ministry officials, in coordination with the Limassol Deputy District Officer, will conduct site inspections and provide support to affected farmers.
