TEMU: ''Half Cyprus is better than none''

Temu faces backlash over controversial Cyprus t-shirt slogan

Newsroom

The online shopping platform Temu is drawing criticism for selling a T-shirt with a slogan referencing the Cyprus issue. The shirt, priced at €11.90 on sale from an original €23.69, features the phrase “Half Cyprus is better than none.” The slogan appears to play off the saying “Half a loaf is better than none,” but in this case, it references the ongoing division of Cyprus — a deeply sensitive subject for many Cypriots.

The shirt has sparked negative reactions from consumers who view the message as insensitive to the Cyprus problem, a long-standing conflict that has split the island since 1974.

Temu, a Chinese e-commerce giant known for offering steep discounts on items, has come under scrutiny in Europe, where regulators are weighing tariffs on low-cost imports from online platforms. The European Commission has proposed removing the current €150 tax-free threshold on purchases, which could make products from companies like Temu subject to new fees and reduce their appeal among European consumers.

The Commission’s proposal aims to level the playing field for EU businesses and address growing concerns over ultra-low-cost products entering European markets tax-free.
