Two key road projects are nearing completion in Cyprus and are expected to significantly improve transport links and everyday life for citizens, especially in rural and mountainous areas. According to Kathimerini's Dorita Yiannakou, the Limassol–Saittas road and the Astromeritis–Evrychou motorway aim to ease travel, reduce congestion, and better connect remote communities with urban centers.
Limassol–Saittas road opens end of May
The first phase of the long-anticipated Limassol–Saittas road is set to open to traffic by the end of May, according to the Public Works Department. This 3.7 km stretch, from the Spyros Kyprianou Sports Centre (Palais de Sport) to the Palodeia exit, is part of a larger 22.5 km road project that will eventually bypass Alassa, Lania, and Trimiklini, ending at Saittas.
Although most of the work was finished three months ago, the contractor, Cyfield Construction Ltd., kept some crews on-site to wrap up final touches that don’t affect traffic flow. Once fully completed, the road will feature four interchanges, three semi-interchanges, six bridges, a 310-meter tunnel in Saittas, and over 30 km of connecting roads.
Originally scheduled for completion in March 2023, the €26.1 million project faced justified delays due to necessary adjustments to utility services.
Astromeritis–Evrychou highway to be delivered by year’s end
Further north, work is moving full steam ahead on the Astromeritis–Evrychou highway, which is on track to open by the end of 2025. The new road begins just south of Astromeritis, after the junction for Vyzakia, and connects to the existing network near Evrychou.
The project includes at-grade intersections, crossings, and a 750-meter bridge over the Elia River in Vizakia, set to become the longest bridge in Cyprus. The motorway, valued at €74.5 million (excluding VAT), is being built by the Cybarco–Pharmakas consortium.
This project is part of the national plan to improve infrastructure in mountainous areas and has been declared a government priority.
