Police are searching for two additional suspects in connection with the murder of 49-year-old Stavros Demosthenous, following rapid developments revealed Monday in court.
The Limassol District Court granted an eight-day detention order for a 51-year-old suspect and renewed the detention of a 44-year-old, the first person arrested in the case. Both are allegedly linked to vehicles used by the perpetrators.
Investigators said the 51-year-old is connected to a car stolen on Oct. 5, which was found near the victim’s home three days before the murder. The car carried fake license plates and two jerrycans of flammable material. DNA from the 51-year-old matched genetic material on one of the containers, believed to have been intended for arson. He denies any involvement.
The 44-year-old suspect owns the motorcycle allegedly used in the perpetrators’ escape. He claims to have sold it to a 30-year-old and a 58-year-old, both currently in custody. Also detained are a 39-year-old man, whose vehicle was allegedly used to transport the killers after they fled, and a 30-year-old convict accused of arranging the motorcycle’s purchase.
Police have so far conducted 20 searches, taken 68 witness statements, and plan to collect more than 90 additional statements. Authorities have requested access to telecommunications data for several suspects, with results still pending.
Evidence recently obtained has led to warrants for two more individuals, though police have not disclosed further details about their alleged roles in the case.
