The United Nations announced Wednesday that more than 90,000 individuals have been displaced due to five days of Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon amid rising tensions in the region. The UN’s International Organization for Migration reported 90,530 newly displaced persons since Monday.
Since Hezbollah began launching rockets into northern Israel nearly a year ago, around 200,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in Lebanon. On the same day, Hezbollah fired a missile at Tel Aviv, its furthest strike yet, although the military intercepted it. This marked a significant escalation in hostilities following Israeli attacks in Lebanon that have reportedly resulted in hundreds of casualties.
Hezbollah stated that the missile was aimed at the Mossad intelligence agency’s headquarters, attributing recent attacks on its leaders to Israeli operations. The violence has intensified following a recent incident where explosives concealed in communication devices killed and injured numerous individuals, including Hezbollah members.
Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged British citizens living in Lebanon to leave the country immediately. To facilitate potential evacuations, the UK is deploying 700 troops to the British bases in Akrotiri, Cyprus. These forces will be prepared to assist with the evacuation of citizens from Lebanon if necessary, highlighting the seriousness of the ongoing conflict and the need for immediate action to ensure the safety of UK nationals in the region.
